Dance Videos - A collaboration with P.E.
5th grade students in P.E. were responsible for choreographing and recording a dance video in front of a green screen. In STEAM, students them used a coding program called Scratch to code animated backgrounds. These backgrounds will be uploaded into editing software. Students will then create and edit their very own dance videos!
2019 Fluor Engineering Challenge
4th and 5th grade students have taken the challenge! Check out the link for a full description of materials allowed and challenge rules. Classes are building a volleyball machine. The machine needs to launch a ping pong ball back and forth across a net. The company will award $1000 to 12 winners. Good luck!
1st Grade Marble Runs
First graders are constructing marble runs! Their objective was to create a marble track for Kindergartners to play with. Students are decorating the runs and are almost ready to pass them off to our Kindergarten classes. Great work!
2nd Grade: Bird Feeders
Second graders have spent some time learning about how birds eat and the type of bird feeders each bird species prefer. Students have designed and are building bird feeder prototypes. Upon completion, kids will make a detailed diagram and a video explaining their feeder. These will be send to a 7th grade technology class at the middle school. The 7th graders will use REAL materials to build the second graders designs. How exciting!
One Hour of Code Week - December 3rd - 7th
We are joining the worldwide movement to participate in one hour of code. Each class during their STEAM time, will be learning to code. We are super excited! Can you find AW Becker on the map at hourofcode.com/us ?
Habitat PBL
Third graders began this PBL by traveling to various habitats via the Google Expedition Goggles. These are 3D virtual reality goggles and they were cool! After exploring habitats, students chose which they'd like to research further. Once they became experts on their habitat, they formed groups and build a 3D model. Using boxes, recycled materials, and our makerspace area they build habitats complete with plants and animals. Check these out!
Coding with Angry Birds
Second and third graders began a coding unit. Vocabulary terms included algorithm, bug, debugging, and sequencing. Students had to use block coding to move their bird through different puzzles. All grades will eventually complete this unit.
Spaghetti and Marshmallow Challenge
After spending some time learning about the engineering design process, fourth graders were ready to test their skills. They were given the challenge of constructing the tallest tower using only dry spaghetti, marshmallows, and a foot of tape. This week they are working together to plan their designs:
Help Harry!
Fifth grade students were given a bag of materials and asked to "Help Harry." They were tasked with building Harry the tallest perch possible so he can better see around the classroom. We had fun and kept Harry mostly safe!
Name Tag Challenge
Students were given the challenge of making a name tag... But not just any name tag!
Before starting, students learned the steps of the Engineering Design Process. We discussed each step and its importance. We also talked about how engineers test and re-test their designs many times before developing something successful.
Each grade level had their own set of requirements and materials. Some requirements included:
-name tags had to stand on its own
-hold a pencil
-be 6 inches long
-show 2 interests.
It was fun to share at the end and see so many different designs! Check them out!
